They aim to protect the character of an area from unattractive, overbearing buildings or disruptive changes of use. For example, you can’t convert your living room into a nightclub. Planners ensure that home extensions are aesthetically pleasing and do not negatively impact local residents or road safety.
In contrast, Building Control focuses on ensuring compliance with safety standards to prevent the construction of unsafe structures. Both departments have strict enforcement powers to address illegal developments.
